Plenty of native plants are used in this design along with local and reused materials. The design is handicap accessible and has plenty of shade from the hot sun in summer.
This area is meant as a "loose parts" area where children can play and create. There is a hand water pump for children to use their muscles and play with the water. The storage shed has fun nature inspired murals painted on it. There are craft areas and pots for planting individual plants in.

BYU-Idaho Children's Playground

This is a redesign of the Children's Playground on the BYU-Idaho campus. It is an environment that is child friendly and invites the feeling of being in nature. I used a Hobbit theme as my inspiration. My design was chosen to be a contestant in the 2014 PLANET "Come Alive Outside" competition. This design was a lot of fun to do and I enjoyed looking at it from a "child's perspective." It was done in a 3D modeling program called VizTerra.
This was a fun project for an advanced design class. It was for a couple that made trips to Indonesia and loved the Bali theme. I incorporated this theme by using a rectilinear form composition, tropical plants and lots of water throughout the design.
This view shows the lounging area around the fire pit and hammock to relax in the shade on the right. Stone steps lead across the grass to the wooden walkway to the Bale.
Here you can see back-lighting is used behind all the plantings against the walls. This creates depth and an interesting 3D effect. The custom built water feature with an elephant head water fountain is also illuminated with blue water lights. The hammock on the right has down-lighting from inside the tree branches above.

Bali Inspired Backyard

This design was also completed in VizTerra 3D modeling. It is a backyard inspired by southeast asian design. Scrolling through the pictures you will feel like you are in another world surrounded by tropical jungle, water, rock, fire and even an elephant.
Circular Design with some natural accent elements.
Coming off the main deck there is a pleasant bench swing under a lovely arbor adorned with purple clematis. While sitting on the bench the homeowners have a beautiful view of a little water fountain surrounded by colorful xeric perennials and ground covers.
These clients love to cook outdoors and wanted their own custom pizza oven. This oven has plenty of extra counter space for pizza preparation and storage underneath for wood.

Bill & Kathy Rice Residence

This riverfront property created a unique design challenge with varying elevations and the clients desire for a sunken patio. This design is a xeriscape using mostly native or draught tolerant pant material that is still attractive and colorful. Kathy is an artist and has an art studio attached to the backyard. She needed an attractive landscape where her clients could come and view her art. Other client needs were an outdoor kitchen, pizza oven, fire pit, water feature, seating for six and two, and a shaded swinging bench.
This front yard design has a pleasant main patio where the homeowners are shaded and surrounded by nature. The water feature is a small stream that starts near the wood bridge and meanders back to a private sitting area. Next to the front porch there is a small water fountain and custom bench. There is a lovely variety of plantings and quality construction materials.
This backyard is a more formal design with an Italian flare. The swim spa is raised with lounger chairs next to it and has a screen of Italian Cypress behind it. There is an outdoor kitchen as well as a covered seating area in front of a fireplace. Outside the master bedroom is a private breakfast nook with two small water features for the homeowners to enjoy.
This is a better view of the rose garden. It is a circle to mimic the beautiful circle hot tub they already have. There is a bench where she can sit and enjoy her roses with an arbor covered in climbing roses behind her.
